Mombasa in One Week - Travel Ideas

If you are visiting Mombasa or Diani beach on a one week holiday and are not sure about what to do as a first time visitor to the Kenya coast, here are some suggestions on how to prepare your week activities, taking into account that your first and last day would be spent relaxing at your beach hotel.

3 Days Safari to Tsavo East National Park

When arriving for a short holiday to Mombasa or Diani beach, one of your desires may be to explore the wilderness on a wildlife safari. A 3 day safari to Tsavo East National Park should be on the top of your bucket list as it offers an opportunity to explore different areas of the national park searching for all sorts of Kenyan wildlife.
Tsavo East is well know for its dusty red elephants, giraffe, lions, zebras, different types of antelopes and it has a great variety of bird life. Tsavo East National Park is approximately three hours from Mombasa or four hours from diani beach by road.

1 Day Snorkelling at Kisite Island

After a wildlife safari in Tsavo you may be interested in exploring what the underwater world has to offer as well. Kisite Marine Park is one of the best places to snorkel and scuba dive on the Kenyan coast. Sailing on a large traditional Arabic style motorized dhow, the snorkeling site is about 45 minutes from the local fishing village of Shimoni and is a popular area for bottle nosed dolphins. A 1 day Kisite Island trip will mesmerize you with beautiful coral, thousands of colourful fish and also introduce you exquisite Swahili cuisine at lunch time on Wasini Island.

1 Day Mombasa City Tour

Among the various Wild Kenya Safaris Day Trips available from Mombasa or Diani Beach, a Mombasa City Tour offers an interesting perspective into its day to day activities. It is unlike anywhere else in the world, it is Kenya's second largest city yet infused with rich culture and Arab influence. Drive by the Mama Ngina waterfront which is a popular weekend hangout for locals overlooking the ocean and pass by the Fort Jesus Museum where you can wander through the Old Town which was the first settlement in Mombasa. Take a moment to visit the Akamba Handicraft where skilled woodcarvers are happy to show you how they turn pieces of wood into artistic carvings.
